Muskogee Community Hospital (MCH) in Muskogee, OK is the first hospital in the nation to earn LEED-Gold for New Construction, awarded the EPA’s Energy Star for design, and the first in Oklahoma to be designed and built using the Green Guide for Healthcare Standards. Sourcing environmentally responsible products was a key focus. Longevity of product service was vital.

VOC-Reducing Furniture Helps Improve Patient Outcomes

Studies show that roughly half the patients in hospitals have breathing issues. MCH President, Mark Roberts, went in search of products that produced little to no harmful VOCs. Mr. Roberts says he was immediately impressed with Kwalu furniture. “We are very focused on creating environments in which patients will improve, Kwalu products helped us reach that goal”, he says.

Coordinating furniture throughout the hospital

Kwalu provided the facility with its stylish eco-friendly seating, tables and casegoods which are Designed to Last. The furniture makes quite an impression, according to Mark Roberts. “Visitors to our lobby remark that it doesn’t feel like a hospital, it feels more like a hotel setting.” Kwalu also provided the patient room furniture, including armoires with custom size and design elements. Kwalu chairs and tables were used in the dining room to create a hospitality-inspired atmosphere.

Extended Lifecycle for Furniture Decreases Expenditure and Supports Green Initiatives

It was important for this project that the furniture chosen should be innovative in style and design, yet very durable so that it would last year after year. Kwalu’s 10-year, performance-based warranty on construction and finish ensures that furniture remains both attractive and functional, day-in, day-out.

“If I had to do it again, would I? The answer is, absolutely!” declares Mr. Roberts.
