The Kwalu Story
For decades, Kwalu has been at the forefront of providing top-notch furniture solutions for the senior living and healthcare markets. Our story began in 1984, when David Horwitz, a visionary South African businessman and owner of multiple hospitals, recognized the need for patient-centric furniture that could withstand the rigors of high-traffic environments and tropical weather. Inspired by the resilience and eco-friendly properties of bamboo, he named the company Kwalu, symbolizing strength and durability.
Originally based in Capetown, Kwalu made its way to the United States in 1996, setting up its first headquarters in Ridgeland, South Carolina.
From the outset, Kwalu embraced innovation and customization, crafting furniture tailored to each client’s specific space and design requirements. From ancillary seating in hospitals to dining chairs for nursing homes, Kwalu expanded its product range to include casegoods in 2002, catering to a wider range of needs and preferences.
In 2008, Kwalu established its corporate headquarters and permanent showroom in Atlanta, Georgia, solidifying its presence in the industry. The company also opened a factory in Matamoros, Mexico, further enhancing its manufacturing capabilities.
Continuing its growth trajectory, Kwalu opened a second showroom in 2019 at the prestigious Merchandise Mart in Chicago, Illinois, becoming a prominent presence at the annual NeoCon tradeshow.
One year ago, Kwalu joined the esteemed family of successful companies under the ownership of Dunes Point Capital, a private investment firm. This partnership has provided Kwalu with additional resources and support to continue its mission of innovation and excellence.
We are proud of the milestones we have achieved and the impact we have made in the markets we serve. With a steadfast commitment to innovation and a passion for creating furniture that stands the test of time, Kwalu is poised to shape the future of the industry.
